My Ramadan Food Gallery

Assalam and hi all,

Ramadan has gone over half way, sadly.  I thought I’d share what I have been cooking in Ramadaan for my family, should you need an inspiration for iftaar menu. Most of the pictures I have posted in halaalife FB and IG hence the captions were derived from. So here’s the compilation:

KOLAK PISANG

Buka puasa/Boeka pwasa.
Alhamdulilah, broke the fast with typical Indonesian Tajil, kolak Pisang and @tehtongtji tea. Accompanied with South African typical break, samosa, spring roll and date.
Kolak Pisang is a sweet soup made from banana, sweet potatoes, sometimes with tapioca Pearl. The soup made from coconut milk, Indonesian palm sugar and pandan leaf.

CRAYFISH CURRY

Iftaar tonight I cooked typical Cape Malay delicacy, Crayfish Curry with basmati rice, atjar veggies, salad, homemade falooda and fresh cream donuts. The savory was samosa, mini pizza and mini steak pies plus butternut soup.

NASI TIMBEL & INDONESIAN GRILLED CHICKEN

Our iftaar menu always consists the marriage of our both cultures iftaar treats.
Main meal, Nasi timbel (streamed jasmine rice wrapped in banana leaves), Indonesian grilled chicken and prawn, sambal, dried fish and exotic steamed veggies and salads.

MARTABAK & SAMOSA

The entree, samosas, typical South African savory married martabak, one of many Indonesian savories. Oh and butternut soup not in the pic.

CRAYFISH CURRY

Iftaar tonight I cooked typical Cape Malay delicacy, Crayfish Curry with basmati rice, atjar veggies, salad, homemade falooda and fresh cream donuts. The savory was samosa, mini pizza and mini steak pies plus butternut soup.

TANDOORI CHICKEN

Tonight iftaar had to be Indians.
As last night I cooked Cape Malay dishes, of hubby’s late mum’s origin. Tonight I cooked Indians, as hubby’s late dad’s origin😊
On the menu, all homemade: tandoori chicken, naan bread, salad and basmati rice.

MIE AYAM & PANGSIT GORENG

… and tonight for iftaar, we were back to Indonesian-Chinese food.
Mie Ayam Pangsit Goreng, chicken noodle soup with homemade fried wonton.
Perfect to keep us warm in this weather🍜

Sate Kambing & Cap Cay

Candle light iftaar 🕯
Due to the storm, we were out of electricity from before sahur last night to break time. Alhamdulilah the light has just been on 5 mins ago.
So for iftar I made lamb satay/Sate Kambing on the grill pan (with condiment, chili, tomato sweet soy sauce), thanks to the gas stove👌🏻 for veggies, I quickly stir fried cap cay/chop suey, a Chinese inspired dish which is a common dish in Indonesia.

CHURROS

Frying churros in the dark and served the churros and orange juice by the 🔥 fire.
Electricity was out for around 18 hours due to the storm. This morning sahur and iftaar tonight were done in the dark. I made this treats, churros and freshly squeezed orange juice for the kids thinking that no oven and mixer involved. Big hits😋

CREPES & STRAWBERRY COMPOTES

For break the fast/ iftaar treats tonight, I made crepes with ice cream, strawberry compotes and chocolate sauce.
The crepe I made from instant @snowflake_sa pancake, vanilla ice cream and strawberry from @woolworths_sa
I made the strawberry compote from scratch so did the warm @cadbury_sa chocolate sauce. Hmm easy quick and warm yummy dessert…

FRUIT PLATTER & VEGGIE SUSHI & TAHU ISI

Our iftaar starter tonight.
I need to think of a way for my kids to consume more fruits and veggies in the Ramadan.
So, veggies sushi, fruit platter with fortune cookies, veggies filled fried tofu it was!
Can’t believe that even my girl ate paprika in the sushi! 😊

BOEBER

Boeber is a traditional Cape Malay sweet milky drink that served traditionally in the 15th night of Ramadaan.
Tonight was the 15th of Ramadaan, I almost forgot to make the boeber. Only realized at 5 pm that I still needed to make it. Alhamdulillah, a boeber mix given by my friend came to the rescue! How relieved I was to find the mix in the cupboard instead of making from scratch in last minute!

DIM SUM

Dim sum for iftaar starter tonight.
Siomay, fried dumpling, stuffed tofu, stir fried bokchoy & mushroom. All made with love from scratch 😋 Hmm..my kind of food…

BEEF RIBS

Easy beef ribs cooked slowly in a heavy cast iron. Simply served with warm rolls, chips and salad.

SEAFOOD BASKET

Easy fried fish, prawn and clams and grilled lemon butter cray fish. Served with savoury rice and chips.
